3.6. Pathology
Evidence of pathological changes following inoculation with the LOM strain was also investigated. There were no specific gross or microscopic lesions associated with CSFV in ten organ samples analyzed from vaccinated and control sows (data not shown). Upon histopathological examination, mild focal perivascular cuffing was found in the cerebrum and midbrain of one sow that was necropsied at day 21 post-vaccination and one sow that was vaccinated in group II. These mild histopathological lesions were also observed in two live-born piglets of vaccinated sows in group II; however, the sows and piglets were negative for CSFV antigen in immunohistochemistry. There were no lesions specific to CSFV detected in the fetuses (stillborn and mummified) of all vaccinated sows.
