Whereas pneumonia burden was higher in males, relative Maxacalcitol on pneumonia hospitalization rates was higher in females, for both clinical and X-Ray confirmed pneumonia. In fact, higher burden of pneumonia in males has already been reported in low and middle-income countries [3] and [40]. Some explanations have been postulated to interpret the gender disparities on pneumonia burden, such as biological flaw of younger boy\'s airways and cultural gender differences in health-care seeking [41] and [42]. A number of clinical trials show gender-specific differences in immunogenicity by several vaccines, including pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine [43], but the reasons for this disparity in gender remains unclear. Similarly, the highest relative impact of PCV10 vaccination on pneumonia in females is still an open issue, and deserves further clarification.
We found no significant trend in pneumonia rates in the pre-PCV10 period in Goiânia, which means that the reduction we found between annual rates before and after the vaccine intervention was not simply a continuation of some downward trend that might have existed due to other reason in the pre-vaccination period. In addition, we could measure the vaccine impact even with the increasing number of pediatric hospital beds in Goiânia, which could have pushed hospitalization rates upwards in the post-vaccination period.
